Romping across the marshes.

Marston Marshes just outside of Norwich is one of our favourite romping grounds. A quick car ride away from the Wensum, and before we know it, we are next to the Yare, romping along, looking out for the gliding barn owl, a hovering Kestrel, or Kingfishers. We are always hopeful we might see an otter too, but so far no luck.

People often stop to tell us about the Parakeets who are to be seen high up in the trees. Everyone you meet at Marston Marshes is, like we are, enthralled by the nature to be seen there.

James stops frequently to photograph wild flowers for his Instagram account, right now, there are many autumnal ones appearing: sloe berries, acorns, elderberries, blackberries, hops, and lords and ladies (which are toxic but pretty). You can also find Ragged Robin and Southern Marsh Orchid.

More recently Longhorn cattle were grazing the marshes – a real treat to see.

It is magical ducking the ancient tree branches hanging over the Yare, their twisted trunks bending with age and weight would have many a tale to tell if they could speak, I am sure. I like to imagine the likes of Kett’s men taking a breather here, but I’ve no idea if Marston Marshes was ever on their route. It feels like you are entering the tunnel of trees into another ancient, mystical world. Sometimes I half expect to see someone dressed in medieval attire coming the other way, perhaps with their lunch in a knapsack…

Marston Marshes is a 64 acre nature reserve on the southern side of Norwich in the flood plain of the River Yare where we have been reliably informed by fishermen there are pike, perch and bream to be found. Swans glide along serenely and this summer it was lovely to watch the Swan’s nest take shape. I am sure there is much more wildlife and nature for us to spot and that is why this place has become so addictive.

Our favourite time to visit is at dusk to watch the barn owl hunt his circuit. It’s peaceful and as you can see from my images the light can be positively dreamlike. I don’t always take my DSLR, all of these were shot on my iPhone.

If you are ever over Marston Marshes way, be sure to visit, like us, you are bound to fall in love with it.

The Friendship (Novi Sad) Bridge

River Wensum photographic series by MyriadLifePhoto

My River Wensum series starts with a photo tour of the bridges along the river. I began with Carrow Bridge as it is the nearest to my apartment. While Carrow Bridge is nearly 100 years old, the Novi Sad Millennium Bridge opened in November 2001, so it is merely a youngster among the bridges of the Wensum.

The Novi Sad Friendship Bridge

The bridge is an asymmetric cable-stayed swing footbridge and is named Novi Sad in acknowledgement of the twinning of Novi Sad, Serbia, with Norwich. Novi Sad is a beautiful city that lies along the banks of the River Danube.

More information about the construction of the Novi Sad Friendship Bridge can be found here: fascinating facts for any bridge enthusiast!

The Broads Authority website gives heights and openings of all the bridges in Norfolk.

The Novi Sad Friendship Bridge cycle path at Night

The Novi Sad and the Lady Julian Bridge both have cycle paths in the centre. As a cyclist, I have to say, it’s a shame that more pedestrians don’t acknowledge this. As a pedestrian, I know it is easy to forget and wander into the cycle lane or be forced into it by other pedestrians.

View to the Novi Sad Bridge up river

In the picture above, you can see the derelict old restoration barn to the right and a picturesque riverside residential building, loved by many a passer-by.

It is a beautiful view towards the city from the Novi Sad Bridge, you can see Lady Julian Bridge and Norwich Cathedral spire in the distance. Check out my little video below.

The pictures above show different angles of the Novi Sad Bridge. There is a patch of land next to the bridge that is being developed into apartments. Sadly the former Ferry Boat pub was forced to close due to noise complaints and financial difficulties.

The River Wensum is changing rapidly before our very eyes. In my next post, I move down the river to the Lady Julian Bridge.

My Work in Progress

Life is always busy but over the past couple of weeks it has been even busier as I have been populating this website with more notebooks, cards and now wall art – all featuring my images.

I have been a photographer for the best part of my life but it is only in the last 12 years or so that it has become my main occupation, along with writing.

Most of my photography shows my deep love of Norfolk, particularly the coast but increasingly the city of Norwich too as I came to live alongside the River Wensum two years ago. I have actually lived in Norfolk for 30 years. Although I know it well, I am constantly discovering new things to love about this incredible county.

If asked, I tend to say I am a landscape photographer but the truth is, I am passionate about most kinds of photography so you can expect to see a real mix as the website evolves further. My sneaky pleasure is street photography but I will talk about that and my influences (both famous and local) in later posts.

This site will also include wildlife and street photography, I just haven’t started uploading many of those yet (but you will find some seals…) so please be patient with me if that is your thing.

Many people have a love of photography and want to learn more about it so I will share some tips on that too if you are a beginner. Please don’t be shy to ask if you have any questions. I may not be a technical expert in all areas but if I don’t know the answer, I have photography friends who will know for sure.

This website isn’t only about my photography and products, my alter ego is @PetraKidd who writes short stories. I want to make this website a great place to discover new authors and books, both local and from all over the world. It is writing that led me to create notebooks. I love to use a nice tactile notebook to jot my ideas down so it made sense to create my own collection.

In a world full of troubles, it’s good to escape sometimes into the world of art so I hope you will enjoy your visits to this website.

Subscribe below to keep updated with what’s new. Something I like to do every month is to reward subscribers with a giveaway, at the moment it is usually a notebook but I could also create digital downloads of my prints or colouring in pages so that overseas subscribers can enjoy a freebie too. At the moment, for obvious reasons of postage costs, I only send the giveaways to UK subscribers but I’d like to be able to change that going forward.

So hit the button above and let’s keep in touch. Feel free to message me at myriadlifebooks@gmail.com if you are an author who would like to be featured here. I try to be inclusive of most genres.
